GED
®  FAQs

Am I eligible for Highland's GED classes?

Highland's Adult Education services are available to residents who live in the Highland Community College District #519, which includes JoDaviess, Carroll, Ogle, and Stephenson counties.

Do you offer night classes?
Yes. Morning, afternoon and evening classes, in addition to one-on-one tutoring, are all offered to customize your GED program to fit your schedule.

How do I prepare for a GED test?
Attend a class at HCC or at an off-campus location near you.

How long will it take before I’m ready to take my GED tests?
We offer several ways of helping you set a goal. You will take tests when you first begin GED classes to establish your current grade level. In addition, we provide official GED practice tests that will help you determine when you’re ready to test.

How old do I have to be before I can take the
GED tests?

An individual is eligible to take the GED Test given they meet the following guidelines: 17 years of age or older, is not a high school graduate or a GED graduate, has maintained residence in the State of Illinois for thirty days. Note: If an individual is of school age and has been enrolled in a public, private, or a home school setting in the last 12 months, they must present a withdrawal letter from the last school enrolled before taking GED tests. If further assistance is required, contact Regional Office of Education.

How many times can I retake a GED test?

Each GED test has 3 forms. During the calendar year (Jan. - Dec.), you may retest using the remaining 2 test forms of the GED test in question.

Is there a fee to take the test?
Yes. You must pay a $50 (as of July 1, 2009) fee at the time you apply to take the test. The fee covers the cost of testing and a certificate of completion and is good for six months from the date of application. Additional fees may include retest fees or sitting fees. The classes to help you prepare for the GED test are free.
